Can I consume Bitter gourd (Karela)?
We do not suggest Karela (Bitter gourd). It is extremely bitter in nature making it fall in the Rajasik category. In the 17th chapter, Verse 9 of Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna says-
"katv-amla-lavanaty-usna-tiksna-ruksa-vidahinahahara rajasasyesta duhkha-sokamaya-pradah"
Foods that are too bitter, too sour, salty, pungent, dry and hot, are liked by people in the modes of passion. Such foods cause pain, distress, and disease.
Additionally, it is not pleasing to the heart (an important characteristic of Satvic food). If we juice it, we have to pinch our nose to drink. If we cook it. We need to add a lot of salt & spices to it to make it palatable.
